Extracts of Aloe barbadensis

Extracts of Aloe Vera / Aloe barbadensis, particularly the gel, are well accepted on a worldwide basis as a premier ingredient in over-the-counter dermal therapeutics and high-end cosmetics.

This is because aloe’s efficient acceleration of the rate of recovery of skin cells from environmental injury is well documented (see accompanying reviews in this volume by Heggers et al. and Strickland et al.). A. barbadensis and A. arborescens Miller extracts are also ingested orally for a variety of reasons.

This consumption results in an aggregate world demand in excess of 100,000,000 liters per annum of crude homogenate juice and filleted gel, as estimated by the International Aloe Science Council (IASC). In order to visualize this quantity, one should imagine 5,000 tanker trucks, each of a capacity of 20,000 liters, constituting a queue sufficient to stretch across a major city.

Yet despite this volume of production much of the world’s supply of aloe juice is still processed without a fundamental understanding of what aloe is, without comprehending the beneficial and deleterious effect of processing and using quality control methods that range from improper to outright fraudulent.

What Is Fitness Bike

The recumbent cycle (fitness bike) is the “classic” aerobic apparatus for beginners. The main muscles activated are: gluteals, quadriceps, femoral biceps, gastrocnemius, and soleus.

The digital display on the apparatus provides feedback on calories burnt, duration of activity, and distance. Exercisers can choose from a number of programs that offer variety and personal tailoring. If the computerized feedback provided by the apparatus is reliable, work has to be maintained at sixty to eighty revolutions per minute (rpm).

If the exerciser deviates from the recommended speed range, the rpm light flashes. Due to load on the quadriceps, beginning exercisers may experience local fatigue in the thigh area, causing them to end the activity before the cardiovascular system becomes the limiting factor.

It is therefore advisable to reduce speed and resistance, if necessary, but to continue with the activity.

Advantages of the apparatus

The back rest provides lower back support and significant reduction of load on the stabilizing muscles in contrast to a stationary cycle.

Disadvantages of the apparatus More expensive than stationary bikes.

It is important to warm up before or during the selected program. Make sure pulse returns gradually to normal at the end of the selected program.
